The latest one to get some national attention (on the front of the New York Times business section Sunday) is eBureau, a St. Cloud firm that provides online consumer scores for businesses to evaluate how good a certain customer is going to be.

Secret eScores Chart Consumers' Buying Power

Online consumer scores are calculated by a handful of start-ups, as well as a few financial services stalwarts, that specialize in the flourishing field of predictive consumer analytics. It might seem strange that one innovator in this sphere has blossomed here in St. Cloud, a world away from the hothouse of Silicon Valley. It is called eBureau, and it develops eScores — its name for custom scoring algorithms — to predict whether someone is likely to become a customer or a money-loser. Gordy Meyer, the founder and chief executive, says his system needs less than a second to size up a consumer and to transmit his or her score to an eBureau client.

Analytics firm eBureau spins off ad biz

Analytics software company eBureau will spin off its business that targets online advertisers. The new company, called TruSignal, will sell eBureau’s technology to interactive-marketing agencies and advertisers. TruSignal’s software mines and analyzes data to determine which consumers are most likely to buy specific products or services.

Investor Redpoint Ventures identifies eBureau as one to watch (begins at 1:50)

Redpoint Ventures' Jeff Brody was interviewed by CNBC at the Montogomery Technology Conference (MTC), March 10, 2010 in Santa Monica, CA where he mentions eBureau as one of his big bets. MTC 2010 featured presentations from over 100 new media and technology companies and there were over 800 venture capital, private equity and M&A firms in attendance at the event. eBureau's CEO Chris Maher was one of the 100+ presenters.
